Exciting New Study Released on Sientra Textured Implants

Anyone who has been following my blog in recent months knows that I have converted most of my breast augmentation practice serving Phoenix to the use of textured silicone implants. The basic reasons I like textured implants are that they tend to be more stable in the breast pocket over time, they do not require daily massage, and they were thought to decrease the risk of capsular contracture, or scar tissue tightening around the implant. For more information on this, please see my Stockholm Experience blogs.

The exciting news now is that I, along with a select few colleagues, recently published an article in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, the most prestigious journal for plastic surgeons, demonstrating that textured implants significantly reduced risk of capsular contracture in a group of 2560 patients.

The study, “Risk Factor Analysis for Capsular Contracture: A 5-Year Sientra Study Analysis Using Round, Smooth, and Textured Implants for Breast Augmentation,” showed strong evidence that when comparing smooth to textured implants, the textured implants showed a statistically significant reduction of capsular contracture. The study also showed benefits with placement of implants under the muscle as opposed to over the muscle with regards to avoiding contractures.
