Patients at our Scottsdale practice consider CoolSculpting as a liposuction alternative when they want to simply tone trouble spots, such as the abdomen or thighs. CoolSculpting is an ideal choice if you are in good overall shape but want to minimize bulges that don't respond to exercise or diet.

Is CoolSculpting for You?
Stubborn areas of localized fat pockets can frustrate men and women who spend hours exercising and watch what they eat. If that sounds like you, CoolSculpting may provide the results you want. Many of our patients wonder if CoolSculpting or liposuction is the best treatment for them. CoolSculpting is approved by the FDA to reduce fat in these areas:
- Flanks or sides ("muffin top" or "love handles")
- Inner and outer thighs
- Double chin
- Bra fat (Pending FDA approval in December 2016)
We use different applicators to treat different areas. While CoolSculpting may not always produce results that are as transformative as liposuction, it works well for moderate fat reduction, and is a non-invasive procedure that does not require anesthesia.

How Does CoolSculpting Work?
CoolSculpting triggers apoptosis — or cell death — in fat cells, using a process called Cryolipolysis™. This process was developed for nonsurgical fat reduction by a pair of Harvard scientists after they noticed that a child's cheeks looked hollower after sucking on a popsicle. What they stumbled upon was the fact that fat cells begin dying when cooled down. Cryolipolysis produces temperatures that are cold enough to trigger fat cell death without damaging the skin or other tissue.
As the fat cells die, they are naturally absorbed and removed from the body through its lymphatic system. This causes your results to gradually emerge as the body removes the cells.
What to Expect
CoolSculpting patients typically experience little or no discomfort during treatments, which last about an hour for each area targeted. Some patients say they notice a tingling and intense cold during the first few minutes of the procedure.
You are free to read or catch up on email during the procedure. Some patients actually take a nap or watch TV in our treatment room. After completing the treatment, you can return to work, run errands, or resume any other normal daily activities.
There is no major recovery or downtime associated with CoolSculpting. That said, you can expect some soreness or mild swelling, but it will resolve on its own within a week or so and can be managed with over-the-counter (or occasionally, prescription) pain medications.
Because the fat cells die gradually, the results develop over several weeks. It can take a few months for the final results to be noticeable. Most patients see better results after a second CoolSculpting treatment, scheduled a month or more after the first procedure. Dr. Cohen's team will advise you on whether more than one treatment is appropriate in your case.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is CoolSculpting safe?
Yes. The CoolSculpting procedure is one of the first nonsurgical fat reduction treatments approved by the FDA, and millions of patients worldwide have been treated with only minor side effects (such as soreness and swelling). When administered by a trained and qualified medical professional, CoolSculpting is very safe.
Are the results permanent?
The fat cells eliminated by CoolSculpting are gone for good. If you maintain a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise, you can expect to maintain the newly toned contours. If you do gain a modest amount of weight, it may emerge in other areas of the body.
CoolSculpting minimizes the number of fat cells in the treatment area, but doesn't eliminate all of them. Liposuction is an option for patients who want more dramatic results.
Will I lose weight?
The Coolsculpting procedure will NOT help you lose weight. However, if you want to lose unwanted fat and look slimmer in your clothes, then Coolsculpting may be right for you.
How much does the Coolsculpting procedure cost?
The price for Coolsculpting procedures varies depending on your areas of concern, the number of treatments needed, and your ultimate goals. Most patients opt to receive treatments in multiple body areas in order to achieve their goals. Create a customized treatment plan, in person, with Dr. Cohen's team that's tailored to your body, your goals, and your budget.
Are there any side effects?
During the procedure, you may experience sensations of pulling, tugging, mild pinching, intense cold, tingling, stinging, aching, and cramping at the treatment site. These sensations subside as the area becomes numb. Following the procedure, typical side effects include temporary redness, swelling, blanching, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging, tenderness, cramping, aching, itching, or skin sensitivity. Sensation of fullness in the back of the throat after submental (under-the-chin) area treatment is common. These side effects are temporary and generally resolve within days or weeks.
When will I see results?
You may start to see changes as quickly as 3 weeks after your treatment, and will experience the most dramatic results after 2 months. Your body will continue to flush out fat cells for up to 4 to 6 months after treatment. The manufacturer's before -and-after photo gallery shows what results look like several weeks after Coolsculpting treatment.
