Patients at our Scottsdale practice consider CoolSculpting as a liposuction alternative when they want to reduce trouble spots without surgery. CoolSculpting uses controlled cooling to safely target and reduce diet- and exercise-resistant fat. It is an ideal choice if you are in good overall shape, but have that last bit of fat that remains.

Is CoolSculpting for You?

Many women and men who spend hours exercising and watch what they eat are frustrated by stubborn pockets of fat pockets that remain. If that sounds like you, CoolSculpting may provide the results you want. We have the latest CoolSculpting applicators that make it easy to treat a variety of areas:

  • Double chin
  • Abdomen
  • Flanks or sides ("muffin top" or "love handles")
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Arms
  • Knees
  • Bra fat

While CoolSculpting may not produce results that are as transformative as liposuction, it works well for moderate fat reduction, and is a non-invasive procedure that does not require anesthesia or downtime. Some patients in search of double chin reduction may be better candidates for treatment with injectable KYBELLA®

How Does CoolSculpting Work?

CoolSculpting triggers apoptosis — or cell death — in fat cells, using a process called Cryolipolysis™. This process was developed for nonsurgical fat reduction by a pair of Harvard scientists after they noticed that a child's cheeks looked hollower after sucking on a popsicle. What they stumbled upon was the fact that fat cells begin dying when cooled down. Cryolipolysis produces temperatures that are cold enough to trigger fat cell death without damaging the skin or other tissue.

As the fat cells die, they are naturally absorbed and removed from the body through its lymphatic system. This causes your results to gradually emerge as the body removes the cells.

55-year-old — Menopause Stole my Waist — Kelly Helped Me Get It Back

Kelly Stockdale is an absolute joy to work with. Nothing about this procedure could be considered "fun." Yet, spending the time to have this done was made almost enjoyable by Kelly. She has the best attitude and a sweet sense of humor. We even shared photos of our loved ones (kittens), while I was hooked up to the ice vacuum (okay, Coolsculpting machine). She is exceptionally well-trained, stays in constant communication with the device representative to stay up on any and all techniques for producing the best results. It's probably a good thing it isn't cheap or I would likely go to work on other areas. I highly recommend having Coolsculpting with Kelly at Dr. Cohen's office in Scottsdale, Arizona.

What to Expect

CoolSculpting patients typically experience little or no discomfort during treatments, which last about an hour for each area targeted. Some patients say they notice a tingling and intense cold during the first few minutes of the procedure.

Patients are free to read or catch up on email during the procedure. Some may actually take a nap or watch TV in our treatment room. Because the CoolSculpting fat freezing procedure is completely nonsurgical, patients typically return to work and normal activities immediately after completing the treatment.

There is no major recovery or downtime associated with CoolSculpting. That said, you can expect some soreness or mild swelling, but it will resolve on its own within a week or so and can be managed with over-the-counter (or occasionally, prescription) pain medications.

Because the fat cells die gradually, the results develop over several weeks. It can take a few months for the final results to be noticeable. Most patients see better results after a second CoolSculpting treatment, scheduled a month or more after the first procedure. Dr. Cohen's team will advise you on whether more than one treatment is appropriate in your case.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CoolSculpting safe?

Yes. The CoolSculpting procedure is one of the first nonsurgical fat reduction treatments approved by the FDA, and millions of patients worldwide have been treated with only minor side effects (such as soreness and swelling). When administered by a trained and qualified medical professional, CoolSculpting is very safe.

Are the results permanent?

The fat cells eliminated by CoolSculpting are gone for good. If you maintain a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise, you can expect to maintain the newly toned contours. If you do gain a modest amount of weight, it may emerge in other areas of the body.

CoolSculpting minimizes the number of fat cells in the treatment area, but doesn't eliminate all of them. Liposuction is an option for patients who want more dramatic results.

Will I lose weight?

The Coolsculpting procedure will NOT help you lose weight. However, if you want to lose unwanted fat and look slimmer in your clothes, then Coolsculpting may be right for you.

How much does the Coolsculpting procedure cost?

The price for Coolsculpting procedures varies depending on your areas of concern, the number of treatments needed, and your ultimate goals. Most patients opt to receive treatments in multiple body areas in order to achieve their goals. Create a customized treatment plan, in person, with Dr. Cohen's team that's tailored to your body, your goals, and your budget. We offer financing through CareCredit for qualified patients.

Are there any side effects?

During the procedure, you may experience sensations of pulling, tugging, mild pinching, intense cold, tingling, stinging, aching, and cramping at the treatment site. These sensations subside as the area becomes numb. Following the procedure, typical side effects include temporary redness, swelling, blanching, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging, tenderness, cramping, aching, itching, or skin sensitivity. Sensation of fullness in the back of the throat after submental (under-the-chin) area treatment is common. These side effects are temporary and generally resolve within days or weeks.

When will I see results?

You may start to see changes as quickly as 3 weeks after your treatment, and will experience the most dramatic results after 2 months. Your body will continue to flush out fat cells for up to 4 to 6 months after treatment. The manufacturer's before -and-after photo gallery shows what results look like several weeks after Coolsculpting treatment.
