Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

A commonly requested procedure from our cosmetic surgery patients is surgery of the eyelids. As one ages, the skin of the upper and/or lower eyelids can become loose, droopy, or can appear “hooded.” This may lead to a tired, sad or angry appearance. Additionally, the lower eyelid fat can become “puffy” creating “bags” under the eyelids, which are often bothersome and unsightly. By rejuvenating the eyelids, patients will appear refreshed, more youthful, and revitalized.

Eyelid Surgery Techniques

An upper eyelid lift (upper blepharoplasty) is a fairly simple and straightforward procedure. Performed under either local, twilight, or general anesthesia, the excessive skin is determined and removed through a small and fine incision hidden within the upper eyelid crease. A small amount of muscle is then removed to refine the upper eyelid, and the skin is closed with delicate sutures. Rarely is upper eyelid fat removed in this procedure.

With the lower lids, there are a number of techniques that can be used depending on the underlying problem. Some patients simply need a skin peel or laser resurfacing of the skin of the lower lids for rejuvenation, while others require a small amount of skin removal or adjustment/removal of the fat under the lower lids to freshen their appearance. Some patients have very lax lower lids that need to be tightened and raised slightly to recapture their more youthful appearance (a procedure called a “canthopexy”). Ultimately, surgical decisions are made based on a detailed evaluation of each patient and a discussion with them about their specific goals during their consultation in our Scottsdale, Arizona, medical facility.
